Northeast LA Alliance: Zumba Die-In (2016)
Flash-mob Action
“Brown Jam” as we have nicknamed it among NELA was developed to speak for the 38% living in poverty, the 26% single parent families, 55% renters, the immigrant families and the hundreds of houseless people of Highland Park who were under represented by the (25) groups that organized and participated in FigJam. The morning performance flash mob that took place on the Avenue 58 stage was orchestrated to show how pervasive displacement has become; and, how blind or unresponsive as a community we have become to the meaning of gentrification.
The Northeast Alliance is a group of local Northeast Los Angeles Residents
committed to witnessing and documenting the changing socio-economic
landscape of NELA. The group is committed to understanding the full effect of
gentrification on immigrant, working class and poor communities and addressing
these effects through education, organizing, visual and performing arts and
ongoing scholarship.
